Happy Day of the Death

Previously I shared some horror movies, made a quick distinction between what is Halloween and the Day of the Death and I promised to give a better explication, so here it is.

The concept
Among the Living: To remmember to our loved one´s (family, friends, pets) or people for we have respect and admiration (professors and outstanding people in any field) that passed to a better life and to give them a killing party in the only day they can visit the living.

Among the Death: To enjoy the meal my love one´s and people who misses me made for me with my peers and to know what has been about them since the last time I came to visit them.

The Tradition
This Holiday takes place in november, the first is for All Saints' Day and the second for All death children´s Day. Either the first or the second day, the ceremony is the same, you got to make an offering with stuff the death person liked when he was alive (food, toys, books, anything), something that belonged to him and a picture, this way other spirits will know that offering is meant to be for him.
Besides these specific objects, there are some others that have to be presented, otherwise is not the same, is like having pizza without cheese:

  • White Candles and Cempazuchitl flowers
I know, Cempazuchitl is a difficult name. This flower only blossoms in autumn and it is said that the smell helps the death to see the way into the living´s world and the return as it also  happens with the burning candles.
This makes me think that the light we are supposed to see and follow when we are born and death is related to this tradition. Is like the fear of the dark that when we find our way and stop being afraid the moment we approach light.

  • Bread of the Death

Standard baked bread with sugar on top. It is called the bread of the death because it is only baked ending October and all November (big chains as Walmart sells it since september!) and because it has long bread shapes pretending to be bones and a little skull on top of it.

  • "Papel Picado" (like Cuted Chinese Paper)
The Chinese paper is commonly used in all types of holiday in Mexico, it has cheerful colours and multiple figures that can pimp your offering.

  • Sugar or Chocolate Skull

Kids love these skulls. They are made of lots of  sugar or chocolate, they are colourful and you can have one of your own with your name written in the forehead!

The mixture
Because we are USA´s neighbours the northstates of Mexico (Chihuahua, Sonora,BajaCalifornia, Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas) have followed some USA traditions and even adapted them into the Mexican culture, some are actually well known and are practiced in some neighbourhoods as it is Halloween.
In some houses the "altar" is prepared before Halloween as decoration for this day.

Here are the links of two cinema shorts about this day
