Wearable Art

Hussein Chalayan is a turkish/british fashion designer, but more than a fashion designer he is a fashion artist, explorer and thinker. His collections of  future-gazing garments are the most innovative and I think that it´s because of the diverse interests he has, like sculpture, science, anthropologie and architecture. Hussein Chalayan is a great example of what it means to have passion and the benefits it has to get involved in many stuff as possible just to enforce your abilities and in my opinion, this will give you the knowledge, wisdom and enough choices to experiment design (and almost everything) in a different way.

For him, all the magic started when he entered to Warwickshire School of Arts in a course  of Fashion and clothing, then he continued to study at Central SaintMartins College of Art and Design in London. Some of his fellows were magnificent designers like: Alexander McQueen in his master´s course and Giles Deacon.

In 1994, he stablished his own company with the name of Cartesia Ltd., as well as his ready-to-wear line, Hussein Chalayan (which was changed to just “Chalayan” because of the oriental connotation).  Unfortunatedly, in 2001 Chalayan forced to file for voluntary liquidation of the company Cartesia with debts totaling $1.5 million. Even thoe to this, he has a great career, he not only has his own label, but also has been the creative director of Puma, Asprey and TSE New York, also two of his multiple awards were the British Designer of the Year in 1999 and 2000.

What I like the most are his performances rather than just "catwalks" because the construction and presentation of the gardements are combined with music and cinema installations. Being on one of his performances must be breathtaking and I can asume Chalayan expects and accoplishes to capt all the audience senses with his work and his ideas to start a new fashion and design era.
